Cultural Diversity FAIL

Yesterday, Bear and Bug were discussing the elementary school art teacher, who is something of a free spirit. At one point, Bear described her as a "hippy."

Bug (with the amount of condescension that only a younger sibling who gets to correct their older sibling can achieve): HahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA! She's not a hippy, Bear. She's ASIAN.

Bear: Um, Bug? "Hippy" isn't an ethnicity, you know.

Bug: ... oh. Huh.

It was hippie day at school on Monday. One first grader asked me, "What's a hippie?" Rather than get into the cultural aspects, I just said, "It's a casual style of dress from the 60s/70s."

So...does that mean "Hipster" isn't one either?

Wait, I can't fill out "Hippy" as my ethnicity on my census form? Too bad.
